"neither you nor I are visible"
“neither you nor I are visible” is a performance series presented as part of In the Light of Your Shadow, a group exhibition juried by Alyssa Velazquez for the Tomayko Foundation in Pittsburgh, PA in the spring of 2026.
For the exhibition, Untitled (gold portal), 2022, a sculpture consisting of hand-netted nylon and knotted pile made of mylar emergency blankets, was activated through performance to shift the status of the static object through contact with the body. “neither you nor I are visible” activates Untitled (gold portal) with the body’s slow improvised choreography, material manipulations, and spatial locomotion on the gallery floor.
Structured as an episodic performance spanning the entire run of the exhibition, the work takes its title from a 1977 performance score by Theresa Hak Kyung Cha titled Audience Distant Relative, who articulates an absent audience in her text. “neither you nor I are visible” produces a similar estrangement, where an audience perceives and senses a veiled and inaccessible performing body until it emerges from the sculpture at the end.
Each episode, ranging in duration between 50-90 minutes, generates a performance artifact consisting of a single Polaroid of the transformed sculpture taken by the artist immediately after the performance. Each Polaroid is labeled on the back with the date and duration of the episode, and then displayed on a shelf installed on the gallery wall.
